Therapy for Men

NARM-informed and EFT-informed therapy for men who want to understand their relationship patterns and show up with more choice.

You may not think of yourself as “the kind of guy who needs therapy.”

Maybe you are responsible. Hardworking. Loyal. The person people count on. You love your partner, your kids, your family, your life — at least, you want to.

But something keeps getting in the way.

Maybe you get defensive faster than you want to. Maybe you shut down when conversations get emotional. Maybe your partner says they feel alone with you, and part of you does not know what to do with that. Maybe you snap, explain, withdraw, fix, avoid, or insist you are “fine” when you are definitely not fine.

You may be trying hard and still feel like you are missing the people who matter most.

Therapy can help you slow these patterns down, understand what is happening underneath them, and begin relating with more awareness, agency, and choice.

This is not about becoming a different person.

Many men come to therapy because a relationship pattern has become painful enough that it can no longer be ignored.

Maybe conflict at home keeps escalating. Maybe your partner has stopped trying to reach you. Maybe you feel more irritable than you used to. Maybe you are tired of hearing that you are “not emotionally available,” but you also are not sure what emotional availability is supposed to look like when nobody really taught you.

From a NARM-informed perspective, we are interested in the protective strategies that helped you survive, adapt, stay functional, or keep connection as best you could. From an EFT-informed perspective, we are also interested in the attachment patterns that happen between you and the people you love: The pursue/withdraw, criticize/defend, reach/protect cycles that can take over before either person knows what happened.

These patterns often make sense.

They may also be getting in the way of the relationship you want now.

Therapy creates space to understand both.

Therapy may help with:

  • Defensiveness during conflict
  • Emotional shutdown or withdrawal
  • Anger, irritability, or reactivity
  • Relationship stress and communication struggles
  • Feeling like you are “always the problem”
  • Difficulty knowing what you feel or need
  • Shame, failure, or not feeling good enough
  • Parenting stress and feeling overwhelmed
  • Patterns shaped by trauma, ADHD, autism, or years of feeling misunderstood
  • Wanting more connection but not knowing how to get there

This is not about blaming you, and it’s also not about pretending impact does not matter. Good therapy makes room for both compassion and responsibility. We can understand why your reactions make sense and still support you in building something different.

When anger or shutdown are protective strategies

Anger often gets the most attention because it is loud, visible, and painful for the people around you. Shutdown can be quieter, but it can feel just as painful to a partner who is longing for connection.

From a NARM lens, anger, distance, defensiveness, fixing, intellectualizing, or shutting down may be strategies that once helped you manage vulnerability, shame, overwhelm, or the risk of disconnection. They may have helped you stay in control, avoid humiliation, reduce conflict, or protect against feeling too much.

From an EFT lens, those same strategies can become part of a relationship cycle. One person reaches, protests, criticizes, or pushes. The other defends, withdraws, gets angry, or goes quiet. Both partners may be trying to protect themselves. Both may end up feeling alone.

Therapy helps slow this process down enough to notice what is happening before the reaction takes over. That is where choice begins.

Therapy for neurodivergent men

We also welcome men whose relationship patterns are shaped by ADHD, autism, sensory needs, executive function differences, masking, rejection sensitivity, or a lifetime of feeling misunderstood.

For neurodivergent men, conflict can get complicated quickly. What looks like “not caring” may be overwhelm. What looks like “defensiveness” may be years of shame from being corrected. What looks like “avoidance” may be shutdown, task paralysis, sensory overload, or not knowing how to enter a conversation without making it worse.

Therapy can help you understand these patterns with more accuracy and compassion, while still supporting real change in how you relate.

You are allowed to want a different kind of relationship.

You do not have to wait until your relationship is at a breaking point to get help. You can want more closeness. You can want to be less reactive. You can want to understand yourself. You can want to repair. You can want your partner or kids to experience you differently. That is enough of a reason to begin.

Struggling alone is not the answer! Don’t hesitate to contact us so we can help address what keeps you apart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this anger management?

Not exactly. Therapy may help with anger, but this is not a one-size-fits-all anger management program. We look at anger, shutdown, defensiveness, and reactivity as part of deeper protective and relational patterns.

Is this specifically men’s work?

This page is written for men who are looking for support, especially around relationships. The work itself is grounded in Will’s broader clinical approach: relational, trauma-informed, NARM-informed, and EFT-informed therapy.

Do I have to talk about my childhood?

Not necessarily right away, and not in a forced way. NARM-informed therapy may explore how earlier adaptations still shape current patterns, but the focus stays connected to what is happening in your life and relationships now.

Can I come individually even if the problem is in my relationship?

Yes. Individual therapy can be a powerful place to work on how you show up in relationships. Sometimes one person developing more awareness, agency, and capacity can shift the whole pattern.

Do you work with men online?

Yes. We offer online therapy for clients located in Oregon and Washington, as well as in-person therapy in Tigard, Oregon.
