Play Therapy

angry catPlay Therapy: Helping Kids Heal Through Play

When 7-year-old Jordan* first came to therapy, his parents were at their wit’s end. He was having daily meltdowns—sometimes over little things like putting on shoes or turning off the iPad. At school, his teachers reported angry outbursts and shutdowns during transitions. He didn’t have the words to explain what he was feeling… but it was clear he was overwhelmed.

In our play therapy sessions, Jordan gravitated toward the sand tray and a set of superhero figurines. Week after week, he created elaborate stories where the heroes were “too big” for their feelings and didn’t know how to calm down. One day, he added a wise dragon character who taught the heroes how to breathe fire without burning down the castle.

Over time, Jordan began using those same tools in real life. Deep breathing. Naming his feelings. Asking for help. He even made a “calm-down cave” in his room with pillows and stuffed animals.

His parents noticed the change—not just fewer meltdowns, but more connection. “He’s still a sensitive kid,” his mom shared, “but now he knows what to do with all those big feelings.”

When words aren’t enough, play steps in.

Children often don’t have the vocabulary to explain what’s going on inside—but they do have toys, stories, and imagination. That’s where play therapy comes in.

Through the power of play, children can express emotions, work through challenges, and make sense of their world in a way that feels natural and safe.

What Is Play Therapy?

Play therapy is a developmentally appropriate approach to therapy designed especially for children. Rather than asking kids to talk about their problems directly (something that can be tough, even for adults), we invite them to explore their feelings through play, art, stories, and creativity.

Think of it like a child’s version of talk therapy—but with puppets, sand trays, drawing, and lots of room for imagination.

Kids process the world through play. It’s how they communicate, learn, and heal. In our sessions, the therapist builds a trusting relationship with your child, offering a safe and supportive space for expression and growth.

As therapy progresses, you’ll often see improvements not just in your child’s mood or behavior—but also in your connection with them at home.

Let’s Play Toward Healing

If your child is struggling, you don’t have to navigate it alone. Play therapy offers a gentle, effective path forward—one toy, one story, one brave little step at a time.

At Hale Counseling NW, we’ve created a dedicated play therapy room designed just for kids – a space that feels safe, welcoming, and specifically made for emotional exploration. Every detail, from the cozy tent corner to the carefully chosen toys and art materials, is intentionally selected to support a child’s natural way of expressing themselves. It’s more than just a room with toys – it’s a therapeutic environment built to meet children where they are, helping them feel seen, soothed, and free to be themselves.
